Hey all! After the success of the first Flat Track Fun Day its time to get together and make it a regular thing. Lets bounce some ideas around. I think the most important thing is that it remains fun, affordable and easily accessible. I think we should run classes ( please comment ) - Small bikes: Monkey bikes, scooters and 125cc Four strokes
- 125cc 2 Strokes and 250cc 4 Strokes. (dt125 / yz125 / ts125 / pe125 vs xr / xt / dr / sr etc)
- 400 - 500cc four stroke singles (xr / xl / dr / xt etc)
- Open class - 600cc and up
The next thing is tires. We all saw how those knobbly dirtbike tires destroyed the track so starting from the next event we will have to find a decent tire to use.
Pirelli MT60's looks decent but will be expensive, but it looks like Startline do a copy in 17inch and 21. There are some other 18inch Startline tires that could work.
Then we need to think about the following and hopefully amongst us we know people who can help out
Medics Marshals Equipment - Gazebos, flags, fire extinguishers, etc Race regulations ( Tony Jones offered his help here) Collecting money for track maintenance
Then the Track!
We have been chatting about finding land here in woodstock / paarden eiland to make a track at. Does anyone know anyone in the commercial property game who can start digging for disused land we could lease?
Ok, enough from me... Its time for you guys to get involved.
Lets go!

If we knew who owned the land by the Pole Yard we could build a crazy track there.
As far as the tires go if you are limited to certain tires it makes it less accessible to the general rider as you want to encourage a rock up and ride deal. To change a tire or wheel on a MX bike is expensive and very hard to do because of the size, which will eliminate most MX potentials. When the track is prepped correctly and the surface is the correct compact soil/clay it is no problem with any tire including knoblies. The track on Monday was to dry and hence as you broke the smooth surface you went straight into dirt/dust. So the track needs to we wetted the day before so it is more like a smooth compact clay surface.
In terms of the classes all that could be added is a "breakfast run class" for all those on commuter type bikes or soft adventure bikes.

Thanks again for the awesome event! With regards to the track options The track can possibly be shared with other types of races? go carts and so on? There is the cape Oval carting track in contermanskloof area. maybe if we contact them and share some maintannce cost, looks like there is nice shaded seating braai areas and so on. Its also not as far out as Dirt and dust. www.capeovaldirtkarting.co.za/galleryThe only open space i know of would be next to the containers in between the highways in Paarden Eiland (Sure we can go 'practice' here) Another option would be to have an indoor track in a warehouse

This was crazy fun, thanks for organizing! I agree about the tires, unless everyone is pro its too expensive and a lot of effort for a standardised tire specification. If the track is well maintained/compacted/wetted it should be fine... How often were you thinking of doing the events?

Gents, I'm afraid that we have been chatting about it and no dirt track will hold up to abuse from knobbly tires. We do not have a clay track and hiring a compacter will be prohibitively expensive and will require compacting after every event. Also, the knobbly tire guys would be at a distinct advantage as they have a lot more grip, and once the surface gets chewed up the rest of the field just eat dust and ruts.
Bernard, I tried to chat to the Contermanskloof guys once but they said they would never let the bike guys near their track. We could try again...
The old guy who came and chatted to me was very open to the bike guys working with the kart guys but was insistent on the knobbly tires being a no go. He is busy negotiating with Mr Kim the owner of the land and said he will let me know the outcome of their conversation and if there is a future for the dirt and dust track. Closer to home I have scouted two potential locations, one as Bernard says between the highways (is that the one Grant is talking about by the Pole Yard) I have hooliganed there before and not been harrassed. I reckon we all get together and go on a scouting mission one day soon.
The other location is next to the Church street bridge over the N1, I think it was a construction yard for when they built the Myciti bus routes.

Tires: I have also been reading about they use specific flat track tires or similar and it looks like this I think one should allow guys to use a similar duel sport tire like these: Ps startline do have flattrack look alike tires, one can also use 2ndhand duel sport tires to save cost Track Why don't we use the Dirt and Dust track for events for now? How many event are we looking on having a year? Then we go chork out a temporary track on one of the above mentioned sites to practice on. Close by so we can go after work or a sunday morning
